Field Techs and Family Ties

Every family group has their own sibling dynamics built on birth order, shared experiences and childhood memories. The Crawford brothers, however, have added a new element to their relationship.

In 2022, they became coworkers at Midco. John joined the team first as a field tech but was joined shortly after by his big brother Jake.

“After talking with my brother and hearing his impression of the company, it was an easy decision for me to apply,” said Jake.

In it together.

Being separated by only a few years, Jake and John spent much of their youth involved in the same activities and had the same interests.

“Growing up, Jake was a great big brother,” stated John. “We were usually playing the same sports, and he introduced me to a lot of the music I enjoy today.”

“We still share a lot of the same interests,” added Jake. “Sports, music and the outdoors. And this job has brought us together on a more regular basis. It’s been a blessing, no doubt. I’m very grateful for John’s openness to me joining the team and wanting me to succeed.”

“We are close friends, but this job made our relationship even tighter,” explained John. “I’m happy to work with him.”

For a time, Jake and John worked out of the same Technical Operation Center and brought some of their fun family energy to the team.

“While we were both working in St. Joseph, we got to see each other every week for meetings,” explained Jake. “We got to share a hug and hopefully bring a sense of family to the group.”

Starting as the new person on the squad, Jake also described how having that familiar face you felt completely comfortable with led to great discussions with the team as a whole.

“We communicate a lot!” emphasized Jake. “I think it can be hard to open up with coworkers about our shortcomings and mistakes we make. The fact that I can bounce issues off John and see that he is having the same problems and struggles empowers me to then feel comfortable to share with our larger team of field techs and managers. I think that is a huge boost to our team’s ability to grow.”

A healthy dose of sibling rivalry.

Along with sharing questions at work, Jake and John also share a competitive spirit.

“There is a brotherly rivalry there,” joked John. “I think Jake enjoys poking at it more, but it’s tough being monumentally superior to my older brother at a job we both do.”

“We were much more competitive with each other when we were younger – maybe in a less healthy way,” Jake chimed in. “But working in the same position, at the same company, has brought some of that back out in a much healthier way! It’s still fun to beat my brother at anything, but when he beats me, I am excited for his success, and it drives me to want to be better. But also, I would like to add that I won the Top Tech for the St. Joseph area in February, so I’m pretty sure that gives me the latest W in the win column.”
