Reset Cable Box

Like your computer, smartphone and other tech, cable boxes need periodic resets, too, because things can go wrong from time to time. Your cable box is like a computer. It has a CPU, memory and local storage – all running on an operating system. Rebooting helps clear out outdated or invalid network information – and reset your system after firmware or software updates.

Manual Cable Box Reboot

You can perform a manual reboot or power cycle for any piece of Midco cable equipment.

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of your cable box or at the wall outlet for 15 seconds.
  2. Reconnect the power.

During and After Reboot

  • TiVo equipment: Your DVR can take 10-15 minutes to completely reboot. The on-screen guide and all functions should be accessible after reboot. If a recording is in progress when you reboot your DVR, the recording will resume when the DVR restarts.
  • Other cable boxes: Your equipment may take up to 15 minutes to come back online. Most channels should be available for viewing after reboot; however, the menu, ON Demand and current guide information and other features may take up to 30 minutes to load. (It could take up to 24 hours to load all future guide information.)
    • Non-TiVo DVRs and digital receivers: While program information is loading, your guide will display programs as “To Be Announced.” If you’ve set up a parental controls PIN, you may need to enter the PIN to view channels.
    • DVRs: If a recording is in progress when you reboot your DVR, the recording will resume when the DVR restarts.

Rebooting your TiVo equipment varies based on your on-screen guide. (See which TiVo Experience you have.)

Note: Rebooting will not affect your show recordings, OnePass™ or WishList® searches, TiVo Suggestions or parental controls.
