These things happen at the worst of times, and your technology needs to work at its best to keep up with your holiday Wi-Fi needs. Eliminate (or work around) wireless interference.
In-home interference from Wi-Fi-enabled scales, Bluetooth speakers, microwave ovens, or even the walls in your home can interfere with your connection. And other wireless networks – such as your neighbor’s network – could cause problems with your Wi-Fi.
- Make sure your modem is centrally located in your home, based on where you use your Wi-Fi most.
- Get your modem off the floor and out in the open, away from other electronics. This will maximize its ability to broadcast a solid, dependable signal.
- Reboot your modem if you suspect your neighbor’s network is interfering. Your modem will try and pick up the best channel for your Wi-Fi.

Make sure your equipment is up to date.
Keeping up with technology updates – including your operating system, software and app updates – can help your devices and their connections. Download and install any updates before you have guests over (whether in person or virtual) to make sure you’re ready to go.
You should also restart your devices regularly, and clear your internet history and cookies often. Don’t forget to check that all your wires and cables are securely connected, and there’s not damage to the cords themselves.

Disconnect older devices if you’re not using them.
Your internet speeds are only as good as the device you’re using to access the internet. Older devices may not be able to get the same speeds as newer devices, and they can slow down the speeds on all your connected devices.
Turn off the Wi-Fi on older devices you’re not using. This will optimize your other connections – and speed things up on any new devices you get this year.
