Midco tests and certifies specific modems to work with our network – to ensure they deliver the speed and capacity our customers expect, as well as meet our network requirements.
Midco-provided modems are:
- Available for lease or purchase
- Already tested and approved for the Midco network
- Managed by Midco, meaning we push necessary firmware updates
- Supported by Midco’s technical customer care team
Midco only tests, approves and sells modems, not routers.
Third-Party Modems and Routers
If you’re considering purchasing and operating your own internet equipment, there are a few things to keep in mind before you buy a retail modem or router:
- We’re not able to provide technical support for third-party equipment.
- Even if you bring your own modem or router, it must be compatible with our network.
See our approved modems list on this page for details.
With Midco internet service, we require one of these modems. This equipment1 has been certified as compatible with our network, and brings you the best quality of service for your internet connection.
DOCSIS 3.1 modem
We offer service through the most current modem technology available, the DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 3.0 modems. Choosing the right level can make a difference in the speed and capacity you enjoy – but your devices can also have an impact.1
If you have older devices, they will often connect to DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 3.0 technology, but may not be able to reach the capacity and speeds for your internet package. Please consult with your device manufacturer to determine the speed capabilities of your specific devices.
We used advanced DOCSIS 3.0 standard and wireless modems throughout our network. Older DOCSIS 2.0 modems will limit your capability to reach the speeds available with Midco internet packages.
Next-generation DOCSIS 3.1 modems enable us to offer gigabit internet speeds via cable modem to homes and businesses.1 Think of these modems as an interstate or multiple-lane road with more room for internet traffic flow, when compared to a traditional Wi-Fi modem. Our gigabit-enabled modems include a powerful combination of these advanced features:
More wireless antennas: Our wireless DOCSIS 3.1 modems come with more Wi-Fi antennas, making them more powerful than DOCSIS 3.0 modems. These four antennas broadcast wireless signals to your devices, and four more antennas receive wireless signals from your devices. This is known as 4x4 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology.
Optimized Wi-Fi signals: A dual-band wireless modem can broadcast two types of wireless signals – the primary differences being range and bandwidth. When you’re on the 5 GHz frequency, you’ll get faster data rates at a shorter distance. When you’re using 2.4 GHz, your coverage extends to greater distance, but at slower speeds. Our modem for wireless gig offers both options on a single network. Learn more about wireless frequencies.
Most recent Wi-Fi standard: While the 801.11ac wireless networking standard has been around for about 10 years, it becomes more powerful when combined with MIMO technology available in Midco’s gigabit wireless modems.
DOCSIS 3.1 Modem & Retail Router
Some people prefer to have a standard DOCSIS 3.1 modem from Midco and buy their own wireless router. If you’re doing this, be sure to look for a router with the following specifications:
- Gigabit Ethernet ports
- 802.11ac - AC1900 or above
- Dual core processor
Here are some gigabit-capable wireless routers that meet those specifications. These routers are available through various retailers. Please note that Midco does not endorse, provide or support third-party routers.
